The school system in Ontario is undergoing changes. A target of 90% graduation has been established for high schools. This is commendable. But extra efforts mean extra expense and there is a push for quantity over quality. There is a real cost to this. This blog points that out with the analogy of not preparing for winter.

Why do we not retain children when they are not doing well in their Grade level? We continue to move the children forward as they continue to struggle.

If we need parent involvement...most parents were educated under a different perspective of teaching. What can we do to help parents help their children prepare for the 21st century and become creative thinkers?

What other measurable goals do you have other than 90% ? It seems too narrow. Should we not also have targets for university gradations too ?

Comment: There is no doubt that technology is taking over as a way of 'learning' - but, not necessarily of 'success'. I'm really interested to see your research of skills gap, and 7c skills, and century approach - all imply the necessity for 'people/family engagement' as a more visible factor of success, over that of technology . It's a very delicate mix. So to make our/my child's experience even 'grander' - requires not only up to date technology, but most importantly - human engagement. I think that this is an extremely important, and sometimes forgotten, factor (virture) that you need to convey to parents/guaradians. An empathetic teacher/staffmember is ideal, but it goes so much beyond the classroom.

I would like to speak to the full day kindergarten/"Ready 2 Learn" programs. There is a lack of information filtering from the UCDSB to the various stakeholders (E.g parents, child care providers) on the progress of these programs. Is R2L going to preclude full day programs? Which schools are being considered next? As a parent of a child who will enter JK in 2011, I am facing having him start JK and change child care providers at the same time. We need good information to make good decisions, and I am looking to you to provide information on your plans to us.
